To accommodate change and adjustment in response to the housing crisis, our project aims to offer homes to the Ngāti Awa people of Te Teko by designing and curating versatile spaces that promote a sense of belonging in the community.

This housing proposal can be understood as the manifold of a central unit structure from which it initially emerged. Each unit is made from Cross Laminated Timber and possesses sets of moving walls that can multiply the number of bedrooms inside. At the centre of this approach was the desire for a housing strategy that had inherent dynamism which would give the inhabitant flexibility in the ways they live as opposed to catering towards a certain familial topography.

Altogether, Whare Taumata can foster multi-generational housing where extended families can live together and share their rich heritage. Additionally, the pockets of communal spaces such as the roof as well as meandering courtyard circulation play a pivotal role in interconnectedness within the wider community.
