Whare Tapere is a iwi-community ‘houses’ of storytelling, dance, music, puppets, games and other entertainments. The base concept for designing this papakainga, using sports such as bowls, basketball, tennis, skating to include any age as we felt we wanted to fully include everyone who steps into this space. It was also important for us to consider the Kaumatua designing for the older generation, or the residents of the facility, to have all the necessary needs of a home yet incorporated into the courtyard typology. As well as bunk rooms for the younger occupants, orientation towards the ocean but also giving enough privacy, and the feasibility of the entire project. Considering cost, scheduling accommodation, Maori demographic, and availability.
